Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
