A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
